Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does my piano need tuned?

A: Your piano is made of over 10,000 parts. Each of these adjusts to the changes in humidity throughout the year. During the spring when the humidity is high the wood expands. In the winter the opposite happens. This constant expansion and contraction pulls the strings unevenly causing their pitch to change.

Q: Why should I have my piano tuned?

A: A piano is an investment. A properly cared for piano can gain value over time. Regular tunings help maintain a piano's condition. They also serve as check ups to alert you to repairs that become needed over time.

Q: Does my piano need tuned?

A: Probably. New pianos should normally be tuned 3 to 4 times during the first year. After that most pianos can stand to have only 2 tunings a year depending on their usage. The best times to have a piano tuned are the spring and fall when the humidity change is most drastic.

Q: Where should my piano be placed?

A: The best place is somewhere with as little humidity and temperature change as possible. This will help your piano maintain its pitch. An inside wall away from heating and cooling vents and outside of direct sunlight is ideal. Also to get the best sound possible, leave 6-8 inches between an upright piano and the wall.

Q: What does a standard tuning include?

A: A standard tuning includes a general inspection of the piano, cleaning the inside of the cabinet, minor repairs, and the tuning itself.
Note: Standard tuning cost does not include additional charge(s) if a pitch raise or more in depth repair is necessary.

Q: What is a pitch raise?

A: See the Glossary page.
